A free premiere of the documentary At the Side of Bruno Gröning runs at Blackheath Quaker Meeting House on Saturday 3 October, noon to 3pm, talk after.
A documentary film is being shown free at the Quaker Meeting House in Blackheath on Saturday 3 October, and anyone can walk in. The screening runs from noon to 3pm in the Lower Room at 2 Lawn Terrace, SE3 9LL. There is no charge, and the organisers say donations are voluntary.
The film is “At the Side of Bruno Gröning”. It is presented by the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, which describes itself as a not-for-profit organisation. Margaret wrote to us on behalf of the group to ask us to carry the date.
“We are a not-for-profit organisation (Bruno Groening Circle of Friends) and we are holding an event in Blackheath soon,” she wrote. “Admission is free, voluntary donations accepted.”
The group says the film premieres simultaneously in London, Belfast, Dublin and Edinburgh. It has now sent us the flyers for all four. Blackheath is paired with The Open Door on Morningside Road in Edinburgh at the same time, and the Irish showings are the same afternoon an hour later, at the Holiday Inn Express on O’Connell Street Upper in Dublin and the Holiday Inn on Hope Street in Belfast.

Check which room before you go
It is the Lower Room, not the Upper Room. The organisers have confirmed to us that the room was changed after the flyer had been printed, so anyone working from a paper copy has the wrong one. The Eventbrite listing has the Lower Room, in capitals, and that is the one to head for.
Corrected 22 September: the flyer’s Upper Room is out of date, and the whole film is being shown rather than part one. Both were confirmed by the organisers.
The meeting house is close to Blackheath station: the SE3 9LL postcode centre and the station are about 200 metres apart on our own measurement. It is a modern building of board-marked concrete with a glazed lantern on the roof, not the old brick hall the name might suggest.
What the film is
“At the Side of Bruno Gröning” is a documentary about Grete Häusler, née Holzbauer. The organisers describe her as a teacher from Carinthia in Austria who met Bruno Gröning in the 1950s. Their Eventbrite listing calls it the story of “a woman who began as a sceptic, but found healing and eventually became a close companion”, covering the years 1950 to 1959.
The whole film is being shown in Blackheath, and it runs about 105 minutes. The flyer’s line about part one only is a printing error, which the organisers have asked us to correct: the film plays in full, then there is a break, then the information session. That accounts for most of the three hours. The organisers say the film mixes interviews, re-enactments and original 1950s footage.
They also make a claim about the experience of watching it that is worth quoting as theirs rather than reporting as fact. “Many viewers report sensing a particular atmosphere while watching the film,” the listing says. “Some speak of a subtle energy, a tingling sensation, or a feeling of inner peace.”
The information session, and the claims made in it
The 45 minutes after the film are the organisation’s own. Bruno Gröning died in 1959, and the group says his “message continues to inspire people worldwide”. The session covers what it calls “the freely available transformative power he described”, supported by “medically documented success reports that continue to this day”.
The general brochure the group sent us goes further. It says the Circle of Friends is now active in more than 130 countries, has no religious affiliations, and is “sustained solely by voluntary work and donations”. It says a Medical-Scientific Group of doctors and other health professionals examines and documents reports of success. It also states plainly that, in its view, “these healings have nothing to do with treatment or therapies”.
We cannot check any of that, and we are not reporting it as established. It is what the organisation says about itself.
To their credit, the organisers set out the limits themselves on the booking page, and the wording is unusually direct:

What it means for you
If you want to go, you do not need to do anything except turn up at the Lower Room before noon on Saturday 3 October. Booking a free Eventbrite ticket helps the organisers judge numbers, and gives you the address on your phone. Take a note of the room, because the printed flyer has it wrong.
Set aside the full three hours if you want the talk as well as the film. If you only want the film, it takes up the first stretch of the afternoon, about 105 minutes, and the break comes after it.
