Things to Do in Lewisham in 2026: Free Museums to Lake Swims

The borough of Lewisham gets skipped by guidebooks that stop at Greenwich next door, which suits locals fine: it means the Horniman’s gardens, a swimmable lake, one of London’s last intact 1950s ballrooms and a market that has traded since 1872 stay pleasantly uncrowded. Lewisham’s best days out at a glance

The Horniman Museum and Gardens: the flagship

The Horniman on London Road in Forest Hill is the borough’s big free day out: an anthropology and natural history museum in 16 acres of hillside gardens with one of the best skyline views in south London. The museum and gardens are free to visit, with charges only for the Aquarium, the Butterfly House and some exhibitions (Horniman).

The 2026 practicalities, from the Horniman’s ticket information:

• Museum: 10:00 to 17:30 daily
• Gardens: open from 07:15 (08:00 on Sundays and bank holidays) until 20:30
• Aquarium: from £2 to £16.80, open daily 10:30 to 17:30, last entry 16:30
• Butterfly House: from £2 to £28.60, 10:30 to 16:00, last entry 15:30
• Voyage to the Deep, the underwater-adventures exhibition, runs until 1 November 2026, tickets from £2 to £30

The £2 tickets are the concession rate for visitors on Universal Credit, up to four per attraction. One thing to know before a special trip: the Natural History Gallery is currently closed for refurbishment (Horniman). On Sundays a farmers’ market runs in the gardens from 10:00 to 15:00 (Lewisham Council).

Beckenham Place Park: the lake and the mansion

The borough’s biggest green space, 98 hectares of it, sits at the southern edge between Bellingham and Beckenham, and it is open 24 hours, every day, free (Lewisham Council; Beckenham Place Park).

The headline is the water: London’s first purpose-built swimming lake, 285 metres long and up to 3.5 metres deep, open for pre-booked open-water swimming and paddleboarding sessions run by PTP (Beckenham Place Park; PTP). Book a session online before you turn up; there is no walk-up swimming.

Away from the lake, the Grade II Georgian Beckenham Place Mansion* hosts artist studios, events and a basement café and bar, with a second café in the Homestead courtyard, and a food and farmers’ market runs on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00. Vehicle access is limited, and the park’s own advice is to come by foot, bike or train; Beckenham Hill station is under five minutes’ walk (Lewisham Council).

What it means for you: this is the borough’s best free family day, and the swim is the one bit that needs planning ahead.

Broadway Theatre, Catford

Catford’s Grade II listed art deco theatre has stood on Rushey Green since 1932, and it is fully back in business with live music, comedy and theatre, a studio season of new plays from Olivier-winner Ryan Calais Cameron, and tickets already on sale for the 2026 pantomime, Cinderella (Broadway Theatre). It is the borough’s proper night out, and the building alone is worth the trip.

The Albany, Deptford

The Albany on Douglas Way calls itself south east London’s leading arts centre, with four performance spaces, a vegetarian café and a garden, open Monday to Saturday (The Albany). The freebie worth diarising: Jazz Saturdays, free café performances from Trinity Laban musicians, every Saturday from 5 September to 5 December 2026 (The Albany).

The markets: Deptford, Lewisham and the farmers’ five

Deptford High Street closes to traffic three days a week for Deptford Market, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 09:00 to 17:30, trading since 1872, with the Douglas Way stretch famous for bric-a-brac and second-hand finds (Lewisham Council markets). Lewisham Market, in front of the shopping centre, has run since 1906 and is one of London’s few six-day markets: Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 plus Sundays 10:00 to 16:00, around 64 stalls (Lewisham Council).

Rivoli Ballroom, Crofton Park

The Rivoli on Brockley Road opened in 1913 and is one of the last intact 1950s-style ballrooms left in London, sprung maple floor and all; you have seen it on Strictly and in music videos for Florence and the Machine and The White Stripes (Rivoli Ballroom). It runs a rolling programme of northern soul and jive nights, ballroom dancing, Latin and disco nights and cinema screenings; dates are on its events page.

The free parks

Lewisham’s parks are the borough’s quiet superpower, and these are all free:

• Manor House Gardens, Lee: a restored Green Flag park with a lake, walled flower garden, an 18th-century ice house, café, tennis courts and outdoor gym (Lewisham Council).
• Ladywell Fields: a mile of riverside green between Catford and Ladywell, with summer paddling and river dipping, resident kingfishers and herons, a café, adventure playground and skate park (Lewisham Council).

Two much-missed venues are on their way back, though neither has a confirmed opening date, so do not plan around them yet. The team behind Hackney’s Castle Cinema is reopening the former Catford Mews as The Castle Cinema, working towards an autumn 2026 opening (Castle Cinema Catford). And Model Market, Lewisham’s night-food yard, is being brought back by German Kraft Brewery, billed for late summer 2026 (Model Market; Lewisham Shopping Centre).
