Lewisham publishes no bank holiday bin rule, so no day is guaranteed to shift. What that means, the next two bank holidays, and when Landmann Way actually shuts.

The last bank holiday of the summer falls on Monday 31 August. Here is what changes in Lewisham, what does not, and where to go, each point checked against the operator’s or the council’s own page.

Trains: the Hayes line is the one to watch

Engineering work closes the Hayes line beyond Lewisham for the whole weekend (National Rail):

  • Saturday and Sunday: no trains between London Charing Cross and Hayes. Replacement buses run from Lewisham to Hayes, calling at all stations including Beckenham Junction.
  • Monday: trains every 30 minutes, diverted after New Beckenham to Beckenham Junction, with buses on to Hayes.

Ladywell, Catford Bridge and Lower Sydenham lose their trains on Saturday and Sunday. Charing Cross itself is open. The Windrush line closure is Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction, not the branch through Brockley and Forest Hill, and the DLR from Lewisham runs normally (TfL planned track closures). Parking: enforced as normal

Lewisham does not relax parking enforcement on a bank holiday. Only Christmas Day and Easter Sunday are treated differently, according to the council’s page on enforcement on public holidays. Pavement parking, loading bans, bus stops and dropped kerbs are all enforced on Monday, and moving traffic cameras run around the clock.

Controlled parking zones are the one thing to check on the sign. The council’s CPZ page says to “see signage at each location for operating enforcement hours on Christmas Day, Good Friday and all Bank Holidays”. Double yellow lines apply regardless. Bins: no published change, so check your date

Lewisham publishes no bank holiday rule for bin collections. There is no bank holiday page in the council’s waste section, and its collection day tool is the only source of your actual next date. Why “no rule” is the answer, and what to do instead

Most London boroughs publish a standing line: on a bank holiday week, everything runs a day late and the last round of the week is caught up on the Saturday. Lewisham does not. Search the council’s waste pages and there is no bank holiday notice, no festive page and no shift rule, in any month. That absence is the answer to the question, and it cuts both ways: nothing is promised to move, so you cannot assume your Monday collection slides to the Tuesday, and equally you cannot assume it happened on the Monday as normal.

Three habits cover it, and they cost nothing:

  1. Check the collection day tool in the week before, not the week of. It returns your address’s actual next dates rather than a general rule, so it already has any change baked in.
  2. Leave the bin out rather than bringing it back in if the day is uncertain. A bin on the kerb on the wrong day costs you nothing; a bin in the garden on the right day costs you a fortnight.
  3. Do not read across from a neighbouring borough. Lewisham, Southwark, Greenwich and Bromley all run different rules, and the one thing they have in common at Christmas is that all of them change.

The next bank holidays, and the ones that actually close things

After the August one, there are two bank holidays left in 2026 and they fall awkwardly. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December, Boxing Day falls on the Saturday, and the Boxing Day bank holiday is substituted to Monday 28 December. New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday. That puts two bank holidays either side of a single short working week, which is the arrangement that historically produces the biggest disruption to collections, and it is the period Lewisham does publish a schedule for. Landmann Way is the one closure that is already confirmed. The council’s own page states the recycling centre is “closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day” and “open as normal on other Bank Holidays”. So it will be open on any spring or summer bank holiday and shut on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Note the council names Boxing Day itself, 26 December, rather than the substitute Monday.

Landmann Way Reuse and Recycling Centre is open on Monday. The council’s page says it is “open as normal on other Bank Holidays”, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day (Lewisham Council). Hours are 8am to 3pm for vans, pedestrians and bikes (3.30pm for cars) on Sunday and Monday, and 8am to 11am on Saturday (11.30am for cars). Bring photo ID and proof of a Lewisham address.

The council published its own bank holiday listing on 27 August. We have checked each item against the organiser’s page where one exists.

  • Beckenham Place Park vintage market, Monday 31 August, 10am to 5pm. More than 50 traders at the mansion, Beckenham Hill Road, BR3 1SY. Free entry (So Last Century). The park is in Lewisham borough despite the BR3 postcode.
  • Ladywell Fields skatepark, Malyons Road, SE13 7XD. Reopened this month after a £75,000 Veolia grant and £7,500 of council NCIL money paid for a quarter pipe, jump box, flat bank, grind rail and driveway ramp (Lewisham Council). Free, any day.
  • Barawak summer fete, Monday from 12 noon. Barawak Centre, 8 Kingfisher Square, SE8 5TW. Free entry (We Are Lewisham).
  • Crofton Park Tavern bank holiday bonanza, Monday. 330 to 332 Brockley Road, SE4 2BT. Market, live music and games in the garden, free entry (event listing).
  • Fox & Firkin, Friday to Monday. 316 Lewisham High Street, SE13 6JZ. Prices from free to £35 depending on the event (Fox & Firkin).
  • Dog and Bell sausage and cider festival, four days from Friday 28 August. 116 Prince Street, Deptford, SE8 3JD, free entry. The council’s listing misprints the end date as “Monday 21 August”; it means Monday 31 August.
  • Sydenham night market, Fridays until 18 September, 5pm to 10pm. Sydenham Station Approach, SE26 5EU (Lewisham Council).
  • Blackheath funfair, every day until Sunday 6 September. Shooters Hill Road, SE3 0QS, £2 entry per the council’s listing.

What it means for you

  • Travelling on the Hayes line: it is a bus from Lewisham on Saturday and Sunday. Allow extra time; National Rail expects the buses to be busy.
  • Parking on Monday: treat it as a normal Monday for enforcement. Read the CPZ sign for the zone’s bank holiday hours.
  • Bins: check your date in the council tool; there is no published rule to rely on.
  • A tip run on Monday: Landmann Way is open, 8am to 3pm.
  • Something free to do: the Beckenham Place Park market and the Barawak fete are both Monday and both free.
