TfL can close Lewisham High Street southbound from 9pm to 6am, Molesworth Street to Ladywell Road, for resurfacing from 30 October until as late as 30 May 2027.
Transport for London can now close Lewisham High Street to southbound traffic every night, for resurfacing works that could run until the end of May 2027.
The closure covers the stretch between Molesworth Street and Ladywell Road, from 9pm to 6am. TfL’s order took effect on Friday 30 October. It lasts until 30 May 2027 “or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner” (TfL public notice, 30 October 2026).
That is the outer limit, not a promise of seven months of roadworks. The order says the closure applies only “at certain times”, and only when traffic signs show it.
What the order allows TfL to close
When the signs are up, the order bans:
- driving south on Lewisham High Street between Molesworth Street and Ladywell Road
- turning into or out of Longbridge Way from the High Street
- stopping on the High Street between Ladywell Road and Whitburn Road
To keep traffic moving, all vehicles will be allowed to use the northbound bus lane between Ladywell Road and Whitburn Road during the works. Northbound traffic is not banned.
Fire engines, ambulances, police and works vehicles are exempt. So is anyone directed through by a police officer or a person authorised by TfL (TfL notice of the proposed order, 23 October 2026).
The signed diversion
TfL says the diversion will be signed via:
- Albion Way
- Clarendon Rise
- Lee High Road
- Eltham Road
- Sidcup Road
- Brownhill Road
- Passy Road
That is a long way round. It takes southbound drivers east along the A20 towards Lee and back west along the South Circular into Catford.
Why now
TfL’s notices give only the purpose, “to enable resurfacing works to take place at A21 Lewisham High Street”. They do not give a nightly programme, or say which nights the road will actually shut.
The same part of the High Street has had daytime lane restrictions for TfL junction improvements since 1 October. TfL’s road disruption feed lists those southbound lane restrictions between Ladywell Road and Longbridge Way until 5 November (TfL road disruptions, checked 30 October).
What it means for you
- Driving south through Lewisham town centre after 9pm: expect to be sent round by Lee and the South Circular on nights when the closure signs are out. Allow extra time on any evening trip towards Catford.
- Living on or off Longbridge Way: you cannot turn in or out at the High Street while the closure is in force. Plan another way in.
- Dropping someone off on the High Street at night: there is no stopping between Ladywell Road and Whitburn Road while the order applies. Only emergency and works vehicles are exempt.
- Taking the bus: the order does not say how night buses on the A21 will be routed. Check TfL bus status before you travel.
We list every live closure in the borough, updated each visit, on our Lewisham roadworks page. Parking rules in the town centre are on our parking in Lewisham page.
