Landmann Way tip is open 8am to 3.30pm Sunday to Friday and 8am to 11.30am on Saturday for cars. Free, no booking, closed 25 and 26 December and 1 January.

Lewisham has one council tip: the Landmann Way Reuse and Recycling Centre in New Cross, SE14 5RS. It is free and you do not need to book, but it is for Lewisham residents only and staff check photo ID and proof of address at the gate. Cars can get in 8am to 3.30pm Sunday to Friday and 8am to 11.30am on Saturday. It closes only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The early close is the thing that catches people out. There is no afternoon opening on a Saturday, and on weekdays cars must be in by half past three.

Christmas and bank holidays

The council says the centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and open as normal on other bank holidays. Over Christmas 2026 that means it is shut on Friday 25 December and Friday 1 January 2027. Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December and the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December (GOV.UK). The council’s page does not say which of those two days it will close, so check before going on either.

What you need to get in

  • Photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport.
  • Proof of a Lewisham address, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
  • A car or a hired van. Commercial vehicles are turned away. That includes vans with signage, pickups, minibuses and trailers. A hired van, including a man and van, is allowed if you can show the hire paperwork.
  • Vans are limited to four visits a year.

Staff can inspect your load before you go in and will not help you unload. Children and animals must stay in the vehicle.

What it takes, and what it does not

The centre accepts most household waste, including furniture and mattresses, fridges and freezers, electricals and TVs, garden waste, glass, paper and cardboard, textiles, scrap metal, gas bottles, used cooking oil, rubble, soil, bathroom suites and kitchen units.

DIY waste has limits: no more than four DIY visits in four weeks, and each time either one large item up to 200cm by 75cm or up to 100 litres, about two standard black sacks.

It will not take:

  • paint and solvents, or other hazardous waste
  • plasterboard
  • turf
  • pallets
  • car batteries
  • trade waste, including rubbish removed by a contractor you have paid
  • landlord waste from an empty property

For paint, solvents and other hazardous items, the council directs residents to book a hazardous waste collection through the City of London. For anything too big to carry, a bulky waste collection from your home is an alternative. Prices are on our bin collection days page.

Landmann Way also has a private waste business that caught fire twice this summer. That site, run by SSSI Limited, is not the council’s tip, and its restart in August did not affect the recycling centre’s hours.

  • Whether the centre closes on Saturday 26 or Monday 28 December, when Boxing Day and its bank holiday fall on different days. We will ask the council and update this page in early December.
